BASIS Media Studio

The design of BASIS Media Studio tried to answer a simple yet difficult question:

how could we build without waste?

This project was commissioned by Basis Technologies, a highly sophisticated company which Artificial Intelligence for Language services are used all over the world by clients like the CIA and Google.

The owner and main client, Carl Hoffman, is a forward thinking man interested in advanced building technologies and sustainable practices. Carl and I had previously discussed his desire to use his own solar panels to power the construction of his main offices in a renovated Brutalist building.

I proposed to ‘build from within’ his new media Studio at Somerville (MA), using CNC milling machines to manufacture the pieces within its own space and eliminate transportation, and take advantage of the new advances with ‘Nylon Fusing’ technologies to eliminate waste. We aspire to continue to feed our machine with Carl’s solar panels and make sure we neither require to expend energy.
